Types of accommodation in Macedonia

If you are looking at apartments for a one or two bedroom apartment, bedrooms are not defined in Macedonia as they are in the west. A one bedroom apartment refers to an apartment with an entrance hall, kitchen, bathroom and room. A lounge is not counted separately, thus if you are looking for a one bedroom apartment by western standards, you should look for one advertised as a two bedroom apartment.

You may also come across an advert for a one and a half (jednoiposoban stan) bedroom apartment which refers to a larger kitchen, one where you can have a couch in, and an additional bedroom.

How to find a home in Macedonia

Expats looking for accommodation in Macedonia should find a reliable relocation company. Relocation Company will have the most extensive list of available housing and can also arrange viewings for prospective tenants.

Once expats have found accommodation to rent, they will need to sign a tenancy agreement. Expats should ensure that they read their lease carefully before signing and should negotiate any terms they are unhappy with.

Expats should look out for the word “nyistandsat” in their lease, which means that they will be obligated to return the property to brand new condition before leaving. It is best not to sign a lease containing this word.

Once the lease is signed, expats will need to pay a deposit of up to three months’ rent. They should ensure that the lease allows them to terminate the contract within the lease period with three months’ notice. Leases can be renewed after they expire.

Houses can be found outside the city centre and are bigger than the apartments. You will usually find a large kitchen with a table where the family dines together and a separate lounge suite in a house. The bedrooms will be used only as bedrooms for the most part, however the older generations in the Balkans still prefer to sleep on fold out couches as opposed to beds. If you are getting a furnished house or apartment, be prepared for this

Choosing a right school in Macedonia

Macedonia has a free education system, which is compulsory up to the age of 16. However, as classes are taught in Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, or Serbian, depending on the region and the school itself, many expatriates living in Macedonia make use of the private, international school system, where their children can be taught in English and take internationally recognized qualifications.
