Moving to Yemen

The Republic of Yemen is a Middle-eastern country located in Western Asia with an area of 527,970 km square and a population of about 28 million. Bordered by Saudia Arabia, Oman, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Aden, Yemen was always an important crossroad connecting Northern Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and has a long history of great kingdoms and ancient civilisations. In fact, Yemen was once home to the Sabaeans people, an ancient people related to the biblical Kingdom of Sheba from the 11th century BCE. Currently however, Yemen is a developing country suffering from the repercussions of a civil war.

Types of accommodation in Yemen

Housing for expatriates comprised of a mix of apartments and houses. There is some beautiful acrchitecture, even in private homes: stained glass windows and intricately patterned facades. Having said that, only a few of the houses have true yards. They are built in the Arab style, with a wall around the house, creating a compound. It’s the Yemeni preference to pave as much of the compound as possible. There are small (often lush) gardens or patches of grass, but not large yards.

While Yemeni architecture is somewhat the most fascinating in the Arab world, housing stock in general tends to be of poor quality. There are two basic housing types; houses of reed, thatch and mud brick, which are largely found in coastal regions. Houses of stone and mud brick are more frequently found in the highlands. Throughout Yemen, access to fresh water and hygienic sewage disposal is poor. Houses with running water, internal sewage systems and electricity remain the exception in most parts of the country, especially in rural areas. For one bedroom apartment to rent per month, it costs on average around 35,000 riyals in the city center, and around 20,000 riyals outside main populated areas.
