Moving to Turkey

Turkey is located between the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas, sharing its borders with Bulgaria and Georgia as well as Syria and Greece. It forms a connection between Asia and Europe, allowing expats to experience a crossover between Eastern culture and the Western world. Turkey is your chance to experience a unique country with a rich heritage that dates back to antiquity!

Relocating services in Turkey

Expats can rest assured that finding suitable, well-priced accommodation in Turkey will be a relatively pain-free and straightforward process. Housing is widespread and varied, with many great deals to be found. It is also a feasible and popular option for expats to buy property in Turkey, as property rates are much lower than in many other European states.

Home Search in Turkey

Searching for a new property in Turkey can be stressful, time-consuming and very frustrating, often requiring that you view numerous properties that don’t meet your requirements. Helpxpat will save your time by assuring all properties closely suit your needs and reporting back to you with an itinerary. Our consultants in Turkey have considerable market knowledge and negotiation skills.

Types of accommodation in Turkey

There are many types of accommodation available in Turkey, from flats and apartments to houses, condominiums and luxury villas. The price of property in Turkey varies greatly according to the type and quality of a residence, its location, how recently it was constructed, and whether or not it has parking facilities (parking space is at a premium in Turkish cities, especially in Istanbul). As can be expected, property prices are generally higher in urban areas than in rural areas.

There are no designated expat areas in Turkey – although expats moving to Istanbul might want to check out the districts of Nişantaşı, Teşvikiye and Cihangir, as these all offer a good range of accommodation options, while at the same time being vibrant parts of the city to live in

How to find a home in Turkey

Leases in Turkey are generally signed on a year-long basis, although this can sometimes be negotiated. Note that bargaining is a common and accepted practice in Turkey – if one lacks the stomach or the skills to do it alone, ask the real estate agent to negotiate a favourable monthly rental fee. Agents will also charge a fee for their services, which is also normally negotiable, and it’s likely that the tenant will have to pay at least one month’s rent as deposit, as well as one month’s rent in advance to secure their new apartment.

Expats are urged to request a written lease agreement before committing to any accommodation and to read it thoroughly. Tenants should ensure that they understand all the terms and conditions laid out in the contract, and if there are any uncertain clauses these should be sorted out and amended before signing anything. Whether or not the tenant is liable for utility bills in Turkey will depend on the agreement with the landlord – sometimes these costs are included in the monthly rental price, and sometimes not.

Choosing a right school in Turkey

Foreign families moving to Turkey face a maze of options, language barriers, cultural differences and difficult decisions when they try to find the best school for their children.

If choosing the right property abroad was stress enough for the family, then it can be a daunting task of trying to research and filter the truth from fiction for a good education for their sons and daughters. Admittedly, schools can differ in performance and philosophy from county to county.

Research early before your move and speak to your relocation agent who will give you a more grounded view of schools in your chosen locale rather than build up perceptions and expectations that could be underwhelming in the long run.

When viewing a school, our school consultant will accompanied you to understand what the school is all about, its activities, homework and what teachers expect of students to learn about the pros and cons of the school. Other considerations include the curriculum and class sizes. Choices

When it comes to parents’ options for schooling, they may be limited due to the location of their new home. An international school is more likely to exist within reach of diplomatic communities while living in a smaller resort affords a wider diversity in the state system.

Attending state schools means free education, your child mixing with local Turkish children, and picking up the language faster. They will assimilate quicker in the community and develop a strong, bicultural identity.

One person that shouldn’t be excluded from the thought process is your child. So weigh up their feelings of a new school, culture and country before making that defining decision.
