Included in any rental will be essentials such as sheets and bedding, while modern conveniences and furniture will also usually be provided if the apartment is advertised as amueblado (furnished).


One thing to check is whether the electricity, gas and water and all suministros (utilities) are connected. If not, it could set you back as much as €200 for each installation. Phone lines can also be expensive to install, although Telefonica sometimes offers deals involving free installation. Community tax and other municipal charges are something landlords must concern themselves with. Service charges within the building should also be the landlord’s responsibility. The real estate agency fee is included in the cost of your rent.

Registering for your NIE

NIE stands for Número de identidad de extranjero (Foreigner’s Identity Number) and is legally required for any foreigner living in Barcelona, which for EU citizens means anyway staying longer than 3 months.
