Types of accommodation in Algeria

The Algerian Ministry of Housing and Urbanism aims at accelerating real estate development so as to create more housing for the needy. However, you can still find a range of accommodation options, namely apartments, houses, studios, etc., in major cities. Room and flat sharing are also quite widespread, especially with students and young professionals.

How to find a home in Algeria

Expats looking for accommodation in Algeria should find a reliable relocation company. Relocation Company will have the most extensive list of available housing and can also arrange viewings for prospective tenants.

Finding accommodation will be one of your utmost priorities if you are moving to Algeria. However, this can be quite complicated due to the scarcity of modern housing units across the country.

In general, rents are quite high in Algeria, regardless of the type of housing. Hence, you will need an average of 19,800 dinars for a single bedroom apartment in the city center. In rural areas, the same type of apartment will cost an average of 15,800 dinars per month.

Moreover, prices for bigger housings units are higher, especially in the city center. Thus, a three bedroom apartment can cost more than 34,000 dinars per month while the same type of dwelling will cost an average of 21,000 dinars per month, hence a difference of 6,000 dinars.

Security deposit

Note that you are required to pay a year’s rent in advance. In case of cash payment, the owner is required to declare it before the notary under the terms of the contract. If payment is made by check or by direct debit, bank statement should be needed.

You must also make a deposit which is equal to a month’s rent. This sum will be refunded to you provided you have not damaged the premises during your occupation period.

The lease agreement has to be concluded before a notary. Otherwise, it will be considered as worthless and you will not be eligible to any right whatsoever. Notary fees will be your responsibility. These will depend on the rent price. You will also have to pay registration fees of about 500 dinars.

In general, the lease has a fixed term according to an agreement between the owner and the tenant. The contract also stipulates that you have visited the accommodation, conducted an inventory and accepted the state in which it is. In fact, you are strongly advised to visit the premises before signing the lease document. This ensures your protection as a tenant. Therefore, when you vacate the premises, the owner can only request you to repair any damage caused during the occupation period.

Rent prices

Rent prices in Algiers are very high and vary according to the type and size of the housing unit, along with the comfort level. Hence, you will need up to 200,000 dinars per month for a 90 m2 housing unit in Hydra. In Dely Ibrahim, on the other hand, a 100 m2 housing unit can cost some 150,000 dinars per month. However, this neighborhood is not very popular with foreigners due to heavy traffic jam. You can also rent an apartment of the same size for less than 40,000 dinars there.

Choosing a right school in Algeria

Expats will have to think carefully about their children’s education options in Algeria. It is unlikely expats will send their children to a local Algerian school unless they’re of Algerian or Arabic heritage or at least proficient in Arabic or French. English is only taught from middle school onwards.

Expats living in Algeria’s main cities have a handful of international schools to choose from. For security and practical reasons, expats working in the oilfields or beyond Algiers or Oran are unlikely to have their families with them.

International schools in Algeria

You will find below a list of the most popular international and bilingual schools for expats in Algeria with fee information. It includes nursery schools, primary and secondary (high) schools and you will find the right school to prepare for International Baccalaureate, and other diploma in Algeria. Some schools may follow the American or British curriculums with English speaking programs while others are regulated under the French or Arabic education system.

Many private schools are international schools that offer international baccalaureate.

These schools may provide non-English education (e.g. Spanish, Japanese, German) that can help an expat student feel more at home. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. International schools are very expensive, but usually offer high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurriculars. Boarding facilities may be available for additional fees.

Education is officially compulsory for children between the ages of 6 to 15 in Algeria, but enrollment can be low after primary school. The primary language of public schools is Arabic. French is the first foreign language taught in all schools and is often the medium of instruction in post-secondary programs as well as private schools. Most educated Algerians are bilingual in both Arabic and French.

Working in Algeria

Work permit

A minimum of technician level is required for foreigners to be hired in Algeria. In fact, according to Algerian regulations, employers are not allowed to hire foreign nationals with a lower qualification. Thus, the recruiting agency must make sure that the candidate meets the requirements set by Algerian authorities and that his qualifications and skills are not available locally.

You will then need a temporary work permit which will be issued by the relevant authority in Algeria. Note that employer generally takes care of the formalities to apply for a work permit. Documents to be produced are the following:

* your identity documents and other relevant information

* certified copies of your degrees, diplomas and other documents regarding your academic and professional qualifications

* Other documents may also be required from the employer. Note that the work permit is valid for two years.
