Types of accommodation in Slovakia

Bratislava is a very up-and-coming Central European capital with a lot of potential. It is not a cosmopolitan or thrilling city but it has this cool charm of feeling both like a laid-back small town and a busy urban center at the same time. It also is a quite safe city, making it ideal for newbies in the whole expat lifestyle. Moving here might not change the life of those who have already lived abroad before, but for those of you who want to make the big step and gather some first valuable work experience in a foreign country, this is a city to get started. Lastly, it is exciting to see the city change literally everyday; the development of new urban planning projects, modern housing and office complexes and hip eat & drink joints will eventually make the Slovak capital a more competitive and desirable place to live

How to find a home in Slovakia

Expats looking for accommodation in Slovakia should find a reliable relocation company. Relocation Company will have the most extensive list of available housing and can also arrange viewings for prospective tenants.

How much expats pay for housing will depend on where they would like to live.

The most expensive accommodation in Slovakia is in Bratislava, the capital – especially in the city centre around Bratislava Castle or Devin Castle. Most Slovaks prefer to buy accommodation, but expats usually rent at first. Either way, prices are relatively low.

Usually when people think of life in Slovakia they expect it to come with affordable living costs. In Bratislava this is definitely not the case with everything, rent being an unfortunate exception and the main issue here is the very high housing demand. As the city became wealthier thanks to large companies and tourism, the real estate sector is in full bloom. However, until that market becomes obsolete the prices will just keep rising. A 25m2 studio in the city center can easily go for 500-600€/month.

Choosing a right school in Slovakia

Compulsory education begins at the age of six in Slovakia. Most education is done through the state system though there are private and international schools available in the capital, Bratislava. The school system is divided into two parts; primary school and secondary school. Primary is often divided into level one and level two which both last four years. Secondary schools are split into those that provide students with vocational courses and those that prepare students for university. It normally lasts four years and finishes with taking a leaving certificate examination.

International schools in Slovakia

There are public, private and church schools providing education in the Slovak language. There are also bilingual and private international schools offering English, German, Hungarian or French language curriculum.

School types by level:

* Kindergartens or Preschools (age: 2-6 years)

* Primary schools: the first 5 years of compulsory education (age 6-10 yeras)

* Secondary schools (15-19 years) providing higher education and higher professional education (gymnasium, secondary vocational, secondary specialized, aprentice)

* Universities (beyond 19 years) – offering bachelor’s, master’s and PHD study

A school year at Slovak primary and secondary schools is divided in two terms: The first term from September 1 to end of January and the second term from 1st February to 30th June. There is usually one-week break after the first term. Main school holidays are from July 1-August 31. Students receive school reports after each school term
