Moving to Lebanon

Lebanon’s population is well educated and capable of filling most skilled positions. This means there's no major push to attract foreign workers to the country. Most expats working in Lebanon are employed by NGOs or within the diplomatic arena. Other skilled foreigners work in construction, architecture or engineering. Tourism also offers opportunities for expats in Lebanon.

New arrivals in Lebanon will find the cost of living in Beirut, Lebanon's capital, significantly higher in comparison to other cities in the Middle East. The cost of housing, food and energy largely account for the high cost of living. Another expense that expats moving to Beirut will encounter is transport. The city lacks in public transport, so the use of a private car is necessary.

Helpxpat will save your time by assuring all properties closely suit your needs and reporting back to you with an itinerary. Our consultants in Lebanon have considerable market knowledge and negotiation skills.

A safer option is to use the services of a relocation agent, who will be able to speak the language and understand the local nuances of the Lebanon property market.

Types of accommodation in Lebanon

Depending on your needs there are different types of housing and ways of finding them in Lebanon. Most expats either rent a villa in the mountainous areas around Beirut or find an apartment for rent inside Beirut. Lebanon is a small country and no matter from where you go, it will not be more than a two hour car ride to reach the capital of Beirut.

If you are planning to stay for a shorter period of time (less than three months) there are options to renting a house or apartment. Especially in Beirut that has a lot of expats, it is not too hard to find a flat to share with roommates or to find a fully furnished hotel apartment or women only dorms.

Most Lebanese don't move out if their parent’s house until they are married (even though this is starting to change in some areas / families) so if you are looking for roommates you will most probably find yourself in a flat filled with other expats, not local born and raised Lebanese. This tradition has also created a housing market mainly catering to families, with the few one bedroom / studio apartments that are available sometimes being as expensive as a two or three bedroom flat.

How to find a home in Lebanon?

In general, Beirut and the Northern Christian Mountains are usually more expensive than other cities that have less expats, such as Tripoli in the north or Saida and Tyre in the southern parts of Lebanon.

If you are very lucky you might find a small one bedroom apartment in a less fancy area in Beirut for around $350-450 a month. The price for sharing a room is usually the same. For a 2-3 bedroom apartment in an old building without concierge or parking you will most probably pay no less than $800 a month.

Choosing a right school in Lebanon

Education in Lebanon is mandatory for children between 3 and 14, and is set out in three stages; pre-school, basic education, and secondary education. Children begin pre- school at 3 or 4 and finish secondary education at 18. Next to Arabic, English or French are taught at a very young age, and once children move out of primary education, English or French are the standard medium for teaching mathematics and science. Tertiary education is available in the form of universities, technical or vocational institutes, and 52% of young people in Lebanon attend university or another form of higher education.

Visas for Lebanon

There are a number of different types of visas available for Lebanon: residency visa, student visa, tourism visa, collective visa, and a work visa. As with many other countries, if your employer is looking for you to get a work visa for Lebanon, they will need to supply an application to the General Security after getting approval from the Labor Ministry that the job they are hiring you for can only be done by you and not a Lebanese person.

If your employer cannot prove that your work is crucial to their business then you will not be granted a work permit. In practice, it has been reported that as long as one has the right paperwork and has paid the fee, this rule will be relaxed to allow access to the country.

Once you have obtained your work permit, you can then make an application for a residency visa, which will allow you to stay in the country for a year. A residency visa can also be applied to allow your spouse and children to live with you in Lebanon, although your work and residency visa will not allow your spouse to work in Lebanon.
